Hospital Dexeus in Barcelona has applied for the first time in Spain to apply a new and less aggressive technology for endometriosis surgery that provides a better preservation of the patients’ ovarian function.

Dr. Pere Barri, coordinator of the Surgical Section and responsible for the Endometriosis Unit of Dexeus Mujer and the Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproduction Department of the Hospital Dexeus, explained that the new technique is based on the use of an inert gas that destroys pathological tissues vaporizing them, without damaging the adjacent structures.

According to Dr. Barri, “the surgery of this type of endometriosis is one of the major surgical challenges of gynecology, since organs of the digestive, urinary or even nervous system are often affected, and when it affects the ovaries it can reduce its reproductive function”.

The new technology allows to be more respectful with the healthy ovary as said by Dr. Barri, "which is key in these cases, given that most of those affected are women under 40 years of age".

In fact, between 30% and 50% of women with endometriosis experience fertility problems, a figure that increases with the delay of the age of motherhood.

In addition, it is estimated that currently in Spain there are one million women affected by this pathology and more than 200 million worldwide.

The new PlasmaJet technology, developed by Plasma Surgical, Inc., is a system exclusively distributed by Grupo EMB in Spain and Portugal and, as stated by Dr. Barri, “it has shown to be safer and more versatile than lasers and other electrosurgical technologies, in addition to be able to guarantee a lower recurrence rate".
